I am supposed to work with Chad Walters on his designs as well to clarify the language that will indicate the usage of the kicker method. What we need to see is that you will use that method, or one of the others, in your roof sections or in a layout.

We are not going to require a full layout for each rafter, but it will be field verified. You can use a kicker tied to the ceiling diaphragm or a load bearing member and they will pass. This leaves the odd rafters out that do not have either a joist or purlin leg. For rafters that connect to purlin legs, which on most common rafters is ½ of them at 24” on center and purlin legs have to be every 48”, the purlin leg will pass as a kicker. Those can be tied together as a continuous joist and would be allowable without any additional kicker. For 24” rafters and 16” joists, 1/3 of the rafters will mate up to a joist. The building official has interpreted that a load bearing member such as a beam, header, or wall would be an acceptable tie in as well.įor the kickers heres something to keep in mind. The odd thing is if you do anything that is not in the code book they reject it, even though it is strong and hell, but some of the description a kicker to its appliciation appears to be a band-aid.
